Ground level, creeping plant 6-12 inches high.
A single dark red-brown to purple or green brown, 1 1/2 inch wide cup shaped flower appears in the crotch of 2 leafstalks. It has 3 lobes
Leaves are large (3-6 inch) hairy and heart shaped, in pairs which overshadow the flower.
Plants colonize rich woods.
Root has ginger-like odor and can be cooked with sugar as a substitute for ginger.
