Early Spring flower
Whorl of 3 leaves each divided into 3 narrow sharply lobed segments (hence cutleaf). There are no basal leaves when it flowers.
White to pink or pale lavender, 4-petal flowers, 1/2 to 1 inch wide in a small terminal cluster on downy upper stem
Roots have a peppery taste.
Plant is 8- 15 inches tall and occurs in rich moist woods
